İSTANBUL – 02.10.2017: To identify the main problems of Turkey's economy and produce suggestions for the solution of these problems, The Economists Platform, are still continuing its activities since 2000 and have conducted a research to get the opinions of Turkish people regarding Syrians living in Turkey.
Within the scope of the study, which was completed by Aksoy Research with 1500 participants in 12 provinces, the participants gave various statements when they were asked about their opinions and perspectives about the matter. President of the Economists Platform Dr. Oguz Demir made a statement about the research results and said the following:
“At a time when Turkey's economic and political problems is struggling with everyday problems, we are continuing our work in a slightly longer-term perspective. The number of Syrians coming to Turkey since 2011 is approximately 3.5 million. We know that there is no turning back in an atmosphere of war. After the completion of the civil war in Syria it raises a question of wether the majority of asylum seekers will remain in Turkey, and this requires an integration and Compliance policy and work. Compliance is a bilateral process. So it is required from both citizens of the Republic of Turkey as well as Syrian asylum seekers to be involved in a road map for this process. We wanted to take off from this point on, by conducting a research that is looking at this matter from an economical perspective.”
Regarding the results of the research, Demir said:
“When we look at the results in general, we see a negative image. The majority of the respondents have a negative perception of Syrian refugees. Especially in many points where it is thought that Syrians are granted privileges, and it is emphasized in this research that Syrians should be subject to the same conditions as the citizens of other immigrant countries.”
While i, 2 of the participants stated that Syrians created unemployment, again, g,2 of them believe that Syrian asylum seekers play a role in the increase of rents. The majority of the respondents believe that cautions should also be considered regarding the granting of work permits and citizenship. X, 2 of the participants expressed their believe that public order and security problems may arise.
“On the other hand, if we look at the statistics, Syrian asylum seekers have little to do with the effect on unemployment and public order. Therefore, it can be said that some of these perceptions in Turkey stems from misunderstandings and prejudices. If we are going to talk about harmonization and Integration in the upcoming period, the public has a big duty and responsibility to change this perception. Otherwise, tension in the social and economic terms will increase completely as a result of these misperceptions. ”
Dr. Demir completed his words with the following: "We believe that the economic and social topics are the most important medium term problems in Turkey. At this point, we realize that the government is making major efforts in regards to that. However, it is of a great importance that these studies are conducted within a specific plan and that compliance is evaluated in both ways.
